here's the compo (i still think its really average):
Funny money
I could not see very well so I held it against the light and looked at it again. The colour just looked wrong to me and when I looked closer, even the serial number was strange and smudged. As the manager of sushi tei, I had to count the takings daily before taking it to the bank. Comparing it with the rest of the hundred dollar bills, this one was out of place. I made a trip to the nearest bank, it was confirmed a counterfeit and was immediately handed over to the police.
On closer inspection, more features did not pass the muster: the watermark-likeness of former Singapore president Yusof Ishak was out of place, as was the kinegram - the silver octagon.
I was shocked upon hearing the news, little did I expect our restaurant to be involved in a spate of counterfeit cases involving both local and foreign currency this year. One of my friends, sergeant Rodney mentioned that counterfeiting is not rampant yet. However, they will do their best to track down the counterfeiter.
Later in the evening, the ringing of my mobile phone interrupted my paperwork.
‘Hello?’ I said in a business like manner.
‘Hi Rachel! My team and I found out the culprit of the counterfeit money you had this morning.’ Rodney responded on the other line.
‘So soon?’ I interjected.
‘Yes, it was rather easy to find with all the information you gave us. Thank you!’
‘don’t mention it, it is after all the duty of a citizen. Anyway, tell me how you came about solving the case.’
‘well… we found out that this was linked with a murder case. The counterfeiter was Lim Sim Kiong, one of the most wanted people in Singapore for forgery and drug trafficking. However, he was found dead near a blighted part of Singapore. The shells from the gun that killed him matched the Mini Uzis – a type of pistol which only rich people can afford. My team saw a similar gun in the house of Dan Brown, one of the suspects of the counterfeiting case.
‘Dan Brown? The writer?’
‘Yes. We bagged his gun and found the perfect match in the barrel of the gun and the shells. Metal fragments found at the crime scene matched the broken trigger guard on the gun. Blood evidence on his clothes that night with DNA test confirmed that he killed Lim Sim Kiong. With all the evidence against him, Dan Brown confessed and told us the whole story.’
‘What was the story?’ I asked.
‘He hired Sim Kiong to counterfeit money for him to pay off his debts. Despite being in a lucrative business, he squandered too much money and was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. From the opulent setting to his revenue of advisors with everything looking pristine, I was deceived that he was so rich. Soon Sim Kiong wanted a pay rise and decided not to work for him anymore unless he does so. Dan couldn’t afford it, threatened to kill him. Hearing this, Sim Kiong ran to a rural area of the land but it was not long before Dan tracked him down and murdered him.’
‘So that is what happened,’ I said with understanding, ‘it was nice talking to you, I have to go now, bye.’
‘Good bye, Rachel.’ He hung up.
A love for money is a dangerous thing; it could end up in dire consequences, like murdering somebody for money and even dying for money.
